Secret of the Old Skirt

Via Flickr:
Book: Secret of the Old Cloak (Nancy Drew #1)
Black shirt: Gap
White and Black Skirt: H&M

I think I might have overworked myself this week because I crashed pretty hardcore after work today. I was supposed to work more on our ESL Libguide but I am giving myself a needed night off.

I might finish this Nancy Drew book that is on the reading list for my children's lit class. I love the idea of Nancy Drew but had never read her until now. Wow. Maybe the series gets better but this first one is not that exciting yet (and the ending seems pretty predictable). Also, I find myself kind of annoyed at Nancy's goody goody ways. What happened to the tweed clad heroine in my head?

Second verse, same as the first

Via Flickr:
Green cardigan: Merona
Gray polka dot tank: Forever 21
Denim a-line skirt: Old Navy
Turquoise Sandals: Gap

I was little shocked when looking at my flickr photostream and realizing that I might be in a warm weather clothing rut. A cardigan with a printed tank and this denim skirt are huge repeats right now but they work so well with the weather (the tank for the warm bike rides and the cardigan for the cold library).

Hopefully it will get cold soon so I can wear tights and cords and boots!! Oh joy!

Is it almost the end of September already? The hot weather (it was 75 today!) still makes it feel like August. It's week 5 here, which means I have 11 weeks to go and that makes me happy. Classes are interesting: I am taking Social Science Reference, Collection Development, and Children's Literature. It's a nice mix of theory and practice. However, I am so ready to just be a librarian. It would be nice to not have to work on homework at the reference desk and instead focus on greeting people.

Oh well, I will survive. Plus, library instruction will get crazy soon (the week after next I teach 8 classes! Grr!)!

It was sunny all day until I started to ride my bike home. Secretly, I love being caught in the rain (and pina coladas!) because it means I get to put on warm dry clothes when I get home (wool socks! sweater!) and curl up by the heater with a glass of wine. I'll take it!!!

All I know is that I have my windows open for the first time since June!! It is supposed to go back up to 80 degrees this week but, until then, I am going to bust out my cardigans!

Fashion Inspiration: Sophia Petrillo

I started this blog so I could look at what I wear and figure out if it is really librariany.  So far all I can conclude is the astounding amount of repetition of certain items (seriously, I didn't realize I favored certain sweaters so much!).  Another goal was to log my librarian fashion inspirations- people real and fake that inspire my fashion choices.  Clearly, many of these inspirations come from tv and books- I find it interesting that I am inspired by characters, instead of real live people.

One of those people is Sophia Petrillo (played by Estelle Getty) of The Golden Girls.  I say this because I used to have this chunky beloved mustard cardigan that a friend lovingly deemed my Sophia cardigan.  Whatever! Sophia is the most stylish of the Golden Girls- her cardigan and old dress combo or her cardigan blouse and gray slacks combo is classic and classy. Plus, who would not want that straw purse!  With some more modern cuts, her outfits can easily be adapted:

This is my favorite: Mustard cardigan, blue button up blouse, gray slacks, and cheese popcorn.

Other favorites:

At first I thought, "Does this mean that I am a frumpy librarian?  Am I portraying librarians as old ladies through my dress?"  Actually, no way!  I think Sophia Petrillo is kind of an ideal librarian inspiration.  She has the classy and yet conservative librarian outfit but outshines it with her dazzling personality and sass.  There's one episode of the Golden Girls that shows Sophia on her daily route.  She tells the rest of the girls she is buying a nectarine but she actually goes out and helps people: she volunteers at the hospital, leads a band at lunch, and helps a friend get the money she deserves.  I think librarians are the same way.  We may seem conservative and old ladyish but really we love helping people and are pretty darn sassy too!

Labor Day Weekend

Via Flickr:
Pink blouse: Old Navy
Shorts: Hei Hei (via anthro)
Gladiator sandals: American Eagle

This is what I get to wear when all I have to do is go to a short meeting and then go to lunch with a friend, followed by leisurely grocery shopping.

I definitely have work to do this weekend (of the homework variety....I can't wait to be done with grad school!) but more time to relax before the semester gets nutty!
