Birthday Cardigan

Via Flickr:
Coral cardigan: Old Navy

I was totally pumped about this outfit today until I realized that I also wore this cardigan last year on my birthday. I guess it is just my birthday cardigan!

I had an awesome day: brunch with a friend, a stop at the local totally twee bakery for cupcakes and macaroons, watching old episodes of Parks and Rec ("All for a free scoop of Rum Raisin. Was it worth it, Ron? Was it?"), biking to work (soon), working one of my last shifts ever, and then an amazing BBQ dinner and cheap beer with co-workers.

I don't think I could have done any better!!

I mean...yum!

Crockpot Chicken Chili

One of my goals (you know, besides getting a job) is to cook some different recipes this semester and to use up the huge store of ingredients I have (since I will be moving in July, job or no job).

I always always have bags and bags of frozen chicken breasts in my fridge. They are cheap and easy to work with- I always have a few thawing in the refrigerator. My standby quick dinner recipe is to quickly marinate one in oil, balsamic vinegar, and Trader Joes' 21 seasoning salute for 30 minutes and then bake it. Good, but totally boring.

I love chili but don't really mix it up- I either make a delicious vegetarian 3 bean chili or beef chili. So when I saw this recipe I thought: "Yes! I can mix up my dinner menu and use up the boxes of plain old chicken I have in the freezer."

This Crock Pot Chicken Taco Chili recipe (with accompanying jalapeno corn bread recipe) is easy and delicious. I'm glad I ventured out.

Now I have to go as the chili is almost done, the corn bread is cooling, and I am in need of a second beer. I still have a few more weekends of being a grad student and I tend to enjoy them!

I think I may also venture into making this chocolate chip cookie in a mug.  Yum!!

Put a bird on it

Best part of the day: when the barista saw my bird pin and just immediately blurted out "Put a bird on it!" We then talked about our mutual love for Portlandia while she was making my latte. Awesome!!

The best part about being a grad student is having lighter work days amidst the crazy days: today I just had a meeting and light reading to accomplish so now I get to watch the Food Network and prep the ingredients for some delicious lemon raspberry muffins I am making my mom for her birthday!

It takes a little time...

Risotto, originally uploaded by You dress like a librarian.
I am currently enjoying a late lunch (totally in my blue stripe pjs....comfort!) while I work on my book talk. It's basically done but I am trying to memorize it so it goes smoothly.

The lunch is a green salad and the last of the delicious mushroom risotto I made this weekend. So I've always used boxed risotto (just add chicken broth and let it do its thing for 20 minutes) but decided to make my own from scratch from arborio rice. Between the chopping (mushrooms, onions, and garlic), the basic sauteing, and adding in warm broth slowly it took about an hour. Holy moly, it was totally worth it!! And it was so nice to just stir the broth in and drink some [a lot] of wine.

I used this recipe but added garlic after the onions had cooked a bit. I also only used 8 ounces of mushrooms and that was more than enough. I didn't have chives but I did throw in some parsley when I added the broth to liven things up.

It took a lot of time to make and clean up but I was reminded that some things are worth the time. I think life is like risotto right now- it's taking time to get a job but hopefully that means the end result will be a job I absolutely love.

Friday Fish

On Wednesday I made the Barefoot Contessa's homemade fried fish (except I baked them...ha!) and homemade tartar sauce. As a kid I wouldn't even try tartar sauce because "it looked weird" so I was a cocktail sauce girl all the way.

This homemade stuff....I may be a convert.

Today I had a bunch of errands to run and I still have to make a dent in the book I will be giving a book talk on. I had so much leftover tartar sauce I decided to make my life easy and delicious by picking up some frozen fish sticks to go with it. Yum. I am full, have groceries, have clean laundry, and am ready to do some reading!

Friday, you are the best.

Pan glazed Pork chops

I actually made these beauties yesterday but didn't post because I was too full on pork chops and baked potato.

I am like Ron Swanson- I only recommend a recipe if I use it exclusively. And this one is amazing. It's full proof and delicious (like scraping up all the leftover glaze in the pan with your spoon delicious).

It is the pioneer woman's Pork Chops with Garlic and Wine.

After a busy beginning of the week where I was too tired for dinner, I owed myself this. I also owed myself some fun reading at Starbucks today. Sigh. Life IS good.

It takes some time

So.....blog posting. Opps.

I have not gotten back into the swing of things as I expected. I realized that we are now approaching the end of week 2 of this semester and I still kind of feel like I am on winter break.

I have plenty of work to do (homework and otherwise) but I think the combination of having work and class on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday (with only our one hour weekly meeting on Wednesday) and continually applying for jobs on my days off has left me feeling a bit stretched. I only dress librariany when I work and have class but I work so much that I get home late and have no energy. On days off I have been being super lazy (i.e. being a recluse in my pjs). Also, throw in the fact that I have already had two job interviews (yay!) and have had to drive far for them (nay).

I need a nice balance of continually busy with time to relax but I am sure I will get used to this arrangement.

I just need time.

Like caramelized onions.

One thing I did right last week was follow my desire to cook new things. I've never made caramelized onions. They are actually fairly easy but they do take a while. Like an hour, for real.

I used this process.  I tried another recipe and it kind of failed. I think covering them really does help.

To use them I added them to my favorite haphazard pasta dish (whole grain linguine noodles cooked al dente mixed with store bought pesto, huge chunks of feta cheese, and sliced and briefly pan cooked cherry tomatoes). Yum!!

So, we will see how this semester goes. Hopefully I come out of it having a job and having adjusted to this crazy schedule! Yikes!

Winter Break!!!

Pictured above: melting chocolate to top homemade brownies so my crushed peppermint candies would stick (idea from the December Real Simple). Yum!!

So a week or so ago I was complaining about feeling bored because my end of the semester workload was super light. Karma!

On Wednesday I met with my supervisor and she mentioned that all of the links on our libguides should open up in a new tab (also, some of the links don't work because whoever created the libguide just copied and pasted the product link instead of our proxy link). Basically, I was done with the 3 libguides I had signed up to edit but some how was given the project to fix all of the links in the rest of the 55 topic guides. Yeah. Just an estimate, it took me about an hour to check and change all of the many links in just 5 libguides. So I spent ten hours between Wednesday and today (which sounds light but is inconvenient when you are rushing around to holiday parties and doing last minute Christmas shopping and packing) doing this. It has to be done by January so I could have worked on it over break but, heck, I was so close to having nothing to do over break, I pushed myself.

As a result I spent most of this week in sweatpants, copying and pasting links.  When I get carpel tunnel later in life, I will point to this as what pushed me over the edge. Whatever. The semester is officially done and I can retire for four weeks of fun reading. Time to take off my dressy day cardigan and zip up my Mr. Roger's style home cardigan. Let the relaxation begin!

Like the dying leaves

My favorite tree is right now is the one with the skinny black branches outlined in vibrant yellow/orange leaves. I am not sure what kind it is (some kind of oak tree?) but I love it.

Inspired I turned to golden yellows and smooth black to imitate its striking hues. Wonderful.

I am a bit less grumpy today- all it took was a morning walk, some Sugar cookie Sleigh ride tea (it seriously does taste like a real cookie!), and helping some students find books today.

Now I am calling it a day and, instead of finishing up some extra work I was given today (more instruction handouts- blerg) I am calling a mental health day and plan on drinking some delicious red wine while making the BFC's Beef Bourguignon (sans Cognac because I am a poor grad student). Life is delicious!

Now, if only this freezing rain would turn into snow!!

Wishing for snow

Well, Thanksgiving break is officially over and I am grumpy about it. I think it's because my work level is so minimum. When I was in grad school for literature the end of the semester was the worst. I basically spent all of Thanksgiving break outlining my own three 20 page papers for my grad classes and grading research outlines for my students (I was a TA with full teaching responsibilities). Then the 3 weeks before Christmas break were filled with tests, frantically writing those 20 page papers, and grading about 50 10-12 page research papers. I remember those overcaffinated crazy days: I hated them!!

But I still believe that I am happiest when I am busy. So I got up today and finishing unpacking from break and wondered why I felt so grumpy. And I think it's because library school quiets way down at the end of the semester. Here's what I have to do in the next three weeks: finish a lib guide for cognitive psych (basically done), read one more YA novel (Blubber), and do this group promotion strategy (which I'm pretty sure is just a plan of what we would do to promote new collections). I could get all this done tonight. I have to work at the library and do a few things for my grad assistantship (it's that time of the year to review and redo webpages) but I am sort of just drifting. Life is not hard. So why am so tired and grumpy?

My theory is that I function better when busy, i just do. And I think this strange half state is the weirdest state to be in. I don't have a lot to do but i have enough to keep me from totally relaxing and vegging out.

I think I am also getting more and more anxious about my upcoming job search. I was able to avoid it all semester and now the semester is almost over!!

Oh well, at least I have some leftover homemade pumpkin pie (I used Mark Bittman's pie crust and then just made the pie filling via the Libby's can) and the promise of snow.

What an awesome day!!

I started off with some reading of Edgar Allen Poe and pumpkin bread with a cup of black coffee!!!

The pumpkin bread I made last week from this seriously amazing recipe from Mommycoddle. Holy Moly!! I am not the most skilled baker and this bread turns out wonderfully every time!

After that delicious breakfast I had an instruction meeting. I then took a walk around campus, just to enjoy the last leaves on the tree. Then I stuffed my face with junk food at our library work party and worked the reference desk for a few hours. I've been sitting at home, in kind of a candy coma watching some Halloween favorites (Hocus Pocus and A Nightmare before Christmas, of course) before I waddle off to bed.

Today got away from me!! I had an earlier morning meeting, then had to finish loading up the library's twitter before my children's lit. class (and eating a lunch of yogurt on the way to class). By the time I arrived home, hungry and way over caffeinated, all I felt like doing was snacking and napping. All of a sudden it was night time and I still have some homework to do!!

No matter how crazed I feel some days I remind myself that I get to spend an afternoon every week talking about picture books. Grad school is tough but kind of awesome. Of the books we discussed this week my favorite was The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Such an interesting genre mix!

I also forced myself to make this tasty healthy raw kale salad using my farmer's market kale. I am feeling full and loaded up with vitamin A!!

Iced Coffee

My saving grace this summer has been homemade Iced Coffee.  After realizing that I was forking over $2 a day for iced coffee at the cafe in the library, I attempted some home brews to cut costs.

It's the perfect thing for a day like today: trying to write a paper in an air conditioned apartment that is still roasting, even with the air conditioner on.

I did some research (of course!) and it seems like cold brewing it in a french press overnight in the fridge might be the best way.  As I am french press-less, I have to rely on other means for overnight coffee.  It's not exactly Starbucks caliber iced coffee, but it still hits the spot for me!

Step 1: Brew a strong batch of coffee the night before.

*To get a brew strong enough to handle the ice I typically recommend a tablespoon of ground coffee for every 2 cups of water, plus an extra tablespoon for strength.  Thusly, for my 4 cup coffee maker I add 3 tablespoons.  I found 4 to be too many.

Step 2:  Let it cool at room temperature on the counter for an hour.  Then place in the fridge to get really cold over night.

Step 3: Fill a glass or thermos half full with ice.

Step 4: Pour cold coffee over ice.

Step 5: Add cream or milk and enjoy!

Long Day into Night

After a rather unfortunate series of events, I am back. I took this picture right before I went up north to visit family, before things went a little crazy. Towards the end of my vacation my Grandma, who has been in hospice for the past month, passed away. So, instead of coming back to work I got my shifts covered so I could stay at home for a little while longer.

I feel like I was in this vacuum-totally cut off from my every day life. My apartment feels strange and biking to the library feels new and different. But I will settle into things- life goes on.

I've got fun things ahead though- I get to work on checking the records for our VHS tapes at work and I am leaving on another mini (but fun this time) vacation to Door County with friends next week.

And I have delicious food in my fridge- I'm mostly excited about my splurge on some local eggs this week.  I feel some egg salad sandwiches and some delicious baked goods (muffins, perhaps?) are in my future.

It alternated between overcast, rainy, and sunny today.  Luckily, it did not rain while I was riding my bike to and from work (it's National Bike to Work day!!).  I had another reference shift and a meeting with the head of instruction to plan some projects for the summer so I felt that I needed to be a bit classier.  And why do I not wear this dress every week?!!  It languishes in my closet for months and months at a time because I forget about it.

In other news, it is very hot outside so I finally caved and cranked up the air conditioner.  Now I am in my pjs, glass of wine in hand, Buffy on dvd (the hilarious season 7 episode where Andrew narrates on camcorder), and formulating cookie baking plans for this week.  At work today someone showed me this recipe for Oreo stuffed Chocolate Chip cookies.  Then I came home and saw this equally delicious homemade Oreo recipe on the Black Apple blog.  Maybe I should make them both?  In any case, I take it as a cookie baking sign from above.  Good thing I am biking to work so I can bike off the extra calories!!

Shorts weather!

Yesterday I needed an outfit that would transition from 85 degrees outside to freezing cold (typical summer library temperature. Brr). I just stuffed this bright cardigan in my bag and voila: instant warmth. I am also in love with these black bermuda shorts- I have had them for years and they dress up and dress down so nicely! From work to our end of the year work party. It was a dip contest, which is pretty exciting as I love dip!!  I made this amazing fruit dip.

Today I wore this more casual outfit (still turquoise loaded though) because I had my last shift of the semester and now I am getting ready to visit a friend.

And on that note, I will be on a self-imposed hiatus for a week.  I start my summer shifts next Thursday but throughout the summer I only work two days a week.  So I will only document those outfits as the rest of my summer wear is a basic shorts and tank boring uniform.

Chili Challenge

It's those precious two weeks before finals when life becomes a blur. Luckily, I seem to be staying on my super nerd schedule (thank you mom for the Starbucks gift card- lattes are my motivation right now!!).

I notice that when I get bogged down with work, my personal life takes a hit. Cooking seems challenging, and picking out clothes is confusing. I wanted to wear this lovely blue blouse today because it feels a bit turn of the century with its ruffles and collarless top. The only thing I ever pair it with is my navy sweater so I had a hard time putting it with anything other than a pencil skirt and navy cardigan. Challenges are good for me- this may not be my favorite outfit ever but it is not horrible. How can we get better (as people, as librarians) if we don't challenged ourselves once in a while? My librarian challenge would be taking crazy science or business questions on chat- I panic when I don't know the subject. But, if i don't take them, how will I learn?

I have had time for some fun things- I made my favorite delicious veggie chili (using only two cans of beans and a few shakes of cumin, chili powder, and red pepper instead of the spice mix) and took a few [too many] moments today to gaze in wonder at pretty tulips:

It's been a bit crazy around here.  When I got ready to write this post I realized I basically haven't posted for a week. Wowzah.  But it was worth it.  I have been a bit behind in my school work because I have been spending extra time at work helping with this cataloging project (which is fun but time consuming) so I have been staying late at the library to read articles, hunched over the G.A. desk in the back. At least I work in a place that is conducive to studying.  Then a friend visited for the whole weekend. It was a much needed break- we drank hard cider, ate salt and vinegar chips, and watched this amazing Dawn French show, Murder Most Horrid (if you love comedy, mystery, and England, it's a must watch).  It was fun but didn't really help get me caught up.  Plus I spent all of Thursday cleaning, doing laundry, and baking banana bread that turned out salty because I should clearly not drink and bake because then I do things like add a teaspoon of salt instead of 1/4 teaspoon.

This week (note: just Monday and today!) was also crazy busy with extra meetings, a presentation, and training (we are going to implement the READ scale, in our reference stats so I had to attend a 4 hour session before my class. Urg.).

As a result of this craziness, I decided I needed some pre-planned fun outfits with lots of color (and a presidential pin), a clean apartment, good food, and a random shopping trip.  I basically took a mental health day after my class ended today.  I went to the mall and window shopped (because I totally shop like a librarian- I need to do research and assess what I already have here before I actually buy something) and then cleaned my kitchen.  Look at those dishes:

Then I made my tried and true chicken stir fry:

Basically, you marinate 3 chicken breasts for 30 minutes in soy sauce, garlic powder, and grated ginger.  Then you chop 2 cloves of garlic, a few green onions, and grate more ginger.  To a pan add a bit of canola oil and a drop of sesame oil.  While this is happening, chop the marinated raw chicken into bite size chunks. When the pan starts to smoke add garlic, onions, and ginger.  Let simmer for a moment and add chicken.  Let cook until chicken isn't pink any more.  While chicken is cooking chop up some bell peppers.  Once chicken is cooked add chopped bell peppers, a half a cup of thawed cut broccoli, a good handful of snow peas, and about a half a cup of chicken broth  Add some red pepper flakes for spice, if you wish.  Let simmer for 4-5 minutes until the veggies are tender.  While this happens, wisk together a tablespoon each of soy sauce, sugar (white or brown), and cornstarch, and about 1/4 a cup of chicken broth.  Add this soy sauce mixture to the pan and cook for a few more minutes (sauce will become thick and bubbly).  Turn off stove top and let cool for a few minutes. Spoon over brown rice.

I actually have to do an online reference shift shortly, but I am feeling much more relaxed (thanks wine!) and ready for an easier week and a weekend full of me time.  Nothing sets me right like helping a student in pursuit of a truth for a question.

And, to quote good old George Washington, "Truth will ultimately prevail where there is pains to bring it to light."  Isn't that what being a librarian means, after all?

Some days, I need to ignore what I need to do and do what I want to do.  For example, today I needed to finish a 105 pg. article about the Census Bureau but instead I watched The Hours on repeat after getting home from work.  I absolutely love The Hours: the beautiful backdrops, the close-up of everyday life, a little V. Woolf, and a soothing score by Philip Glass.  Every time I watch it, I marvel at the beauty of repetition of daily acts.  It brings a bit more meaning to my job as librarian, a job that depends on smooth repetition to keep the library in working order.  Lovely.

Life isn't all about afternoon movie watching and vintage polka dot dresses.  I also decided I needed to not wear boots in this gorgeous weather (it got to 55 degrees today!).  Unfortunately, I forgot about the melting snow and had some very wet feet!  Better than cold feet (both literally and metaphorically).

Besides movies and wet feet, I also volunteered at the local public library's computer lab, boxed up more books to send to the storage facility, and did finish my weekly cataloging post.  I also made this red pepper and tomato soup (which is delicious but involves a bit of time and kitchenware, which means my kitchen is a mess!!):

I roasted my own red and yellow peppers (which is totally worth it!!) and simmered them with onions, garlic, and tomatoes.

I once again reminded myself why I need an immersion blender; blending hot soup in batches in my magic bullet often has painful side effects.

After I shoveled down some hot delicious mouthfuls, I managed to wrangle one picture.

What to wear to a librarian potluck

Fair isle sweater: Forever 21
Gray long sleeve tee: Gap
Jeans: Old Navy
Belt: F21

Today was such a successful day!!  I feel like I have been just trying to make it through for the past few days (I am already behind on my cataloging reading and it is week 2 of the semester. Eek!).  Today I woke up before my alarm for the first time in a long time and, upon searching my closet for warm clothes for my trek to campus, came upon this little sweater I got on sale at Forever 21 last year.  It's so bright and cheery it changed my whole day.  One downside is that is oddly cut so it makes me look a bit bulkier, but the neck detail makes up for it.  I think Fair Isle is a magical pattern (it did originate from Scotland, after all); it definitely made me into a super librarian today.  Feeling very blithe indeed, I felt compelled to wash all of my dishes (which admittedly does not happen until Friday night) and take out my garbage before boarding the bus. I also made a delicious veggie dish for a potluck (more on that later). I worked out today.  I had a lovely reference shift and I also got my intended reading done during slow times.  I got a free cookie while buying an afternoon caffeine fix.  I attended a wonderful potluck dinner with some lovely people.  It's the sweater- I know it.

I need more magic clothes. Perhaps an invisibility cloak as well?

More importantly, this is the dish my sweater and I made for said potluck: Healthy Edamame Salad (Vegan!)

I cannot claim to have found this first; my friends S & B brought this along on a recent friend vacation.  It is amazing and everyone loves it!

All you do is boil some edamame and corn to add to black beans:

Chop some delicious things like limes, garlic, cilantro, scallions, and tomatoes for the vinaigrette dressing:

Then combine and eat:

This and the fair isle sweater are two of my favorite things.
